What is Mahara?
Mahara is an open-source ePortfolio platform developed and maintained by Catalyst. Learners build portfolios from uploaded evidence, journals and reflections, and share them with chosen people or groups. It is used in education and professional development. The freely downloadable code is no longer updated, with current releases offered through subscription.
Project status: The public Mahara code repositories on GitHub (archived 17 November 2023) and GitLab are read-only, and the GitHub README says the repository has not been updated since April 2023 and that current code is available through a subscription. Softaculous lists version 22.10.0 (November 2022). The project itself, run by Catalyst, is still active on mahara.org. We list it because it is still available in the Softaculous installer; consider an actively maintained alternative for new projects.

Mahara requirements
- PHP: PHP 7.2 to 7.4 (limited PHP 8.1 support) per the public repository README
- Database: PostgreSQL 9.4+, MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.1+
- Apache 2+ or Nginx
- A data directory outside the web root
Mahara is a larger PHP application using PostgreSQL or MySQL/MariaDB, and its public code targets PHP 7.2 to 7.4. Because that public code is archived, verify PHP compatibility before use.
