What is ILIAS?
ILIAS is an open-source learning management system that has existed since 1998, used to create web-based e-learning for universities, businesses, schools and public bodies. It is developed by an international community and coordinated by the non-profit ILIAS open source e-Learning e.V. in Cologne, Germany, and released under the GPL.

ILIAS requirements
- PHP: PHP 8.3 or 8.4 for ILIAS 11 (per official install guide)
- Database: MySQL above 8.0.21 or MariaDB 10.5 to 11.8
- Documented recommended minimum: dual-core CPU, 4 GB RAM
- PHP extensions: gd, dom, xsl, pdo, pdo_mysql, curl, json, simplexml, libxml, xml, zip, imagick, mbstring
- Composer, Node.js, OpenJDK, Ghostscript, ImageMagick and FFmpeg are listed in the install guide
- Database collation must be utf8 (3-byte), not utf8mb4
The official install guide recommends at least 4 GB RAM and lists Java, Node.js, Composer and media tools that a shared cPanel account normally does not provide. A VPS is the more realistic environment for anything beyond a small trial.
