Is domain transfer free? How to transfer a domain

Many people search for a free domain transfer. In most cases a transfer is not free, but it is also not an extra cost: the price of a transfer includes one more year on your domain. Here is how it works and how to move a domain without your website or email going offline.

What a transfer costs

When you move a .com, .net or .org domain to a new registrar, the registry adds one year to its expiry date and the new registrar charges for that year. You are paying for a year you would have paid for anyway, just at a different company.

At Hostripples a .com transfer is charged at the .com registration price, ₹1,349.00 today, and the year is added to your current expiry date. You do not lose the time left on your domain.

Before you start

  • Check the 60-day lock. A domain usually cannot be transferred within 60 days of being registered or transferred.
  • Check the expiry date. If the domain expires within a few days, renew it first or start the transfer early.
  • Check your email address. The registrant email on the domain should be one you can read, because transfer messages go there.

The steps

  • Log in at your current registrar and unlock the domain.
  • Ask for the transfer code, also called the EPP or auth code.
  • Start the transfer on our domain transfer page and enter the code.
  • Approve the transfer if your current registrar sends a confirmation email.
  • Wait. Most transfers finish in 5 to 7 days.

Keeping your website and email online

A transfer moves the registration, not your website. As long as the nameservers stay the same, your website and email keep working during and after the transfer. Change nameservers separately, once the transfer has finished, if you are also moving your hosting.

Moving your website too

If you are moving your hosting to us as well, our plans include free website migration. Our team copies the site, then you point the domain at the new server when it is ready.
