Dedicated server vs VPS: when should you upgrade?

A VPS and a dedicated server both give you root access and your own operating system. The difference is the hardware underneath: a VPS is a share of a physical server, a dedicated server is the whole machine.

What a VPS gives you

On our NVMe VPS plans each server is a KVM virtual machine with guaranteed CPU and RAM and NVMe storage. It is the right fit for most growing websites, online stores, applications and development servers, and you can resize it as you grow.

Signs a VPS is no longer enough

• The VPS runs close to full CPU most of the day, not just at peaks.
• Your database no longer fits comfortably in the memory of the largest VPS you would pay for.
• You need a lot of fast local storage, for example for media or backups.
• A client contract or security policy requires hardware you do not share with anyone.

What a dedicated server gives you

Our dedicated servers are single-tenant machines on Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC processors with ECC memory and NVMe storage, with full root access and DDoS protection. All of the hardware is yours, so another customer's traffic never affects your performance.

Choosing a location

Put the server close to most of your visitors. For an Indian audience, choose a dedicated server in India. For visitors in South-East Asia, Singapore is usually the better choice.

Managing the server

A dedicated server, like a VPS, comes with root access, and you are responsible for the software on it. If you do not have someone to run updates and security, plan for that before you upgrade.
